Frequently Asked Questions

What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency includes situations like severe tooth pain, broken or knocked-out teeth, dental infections, swelling, or bleeding that doesn’t stop. If you’re in dental pain or have dental concerns, it’s best to call Swanson Dental Group right away.
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, gently rinse it (without scrubbing), and place it back in the socket if possible. If that is not possible, store it in your cheek (don’t swallow it), in a cup of saliva, or in a cup of milk. Call us immediately—time is critical, and fast treatment can sometimes save the tooth.
Do you offer same-day emergency appointments?
Yes. At Swanson Dental Group in Reno, we make every attempt to see emergency patients as quickly as possible. Although we may not always be able to complete treatment the same day, our goal is to relieve your pain as soon as possible and protect your oral health.
When is a tooth extraction necessary?
A tooth may need to be extracted if it’s severely decayed, cracked, broken beyond repair, impacted (such as wisdom teeth), or loose due to bone loss or injury. We only recommend extraction when it’s the best option for your health.
Is a tooth extraction painful?
We use modern techniques and local anesthesia to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Most patients feel pressure but little to no pain during the extraction. Mild sedation options are also available for patients with dental anxiety.
What is recovery like after an extraction?
Mild discomfort and swelling are common for a few days. Following our post-care instructions—such as avoiding straws, smoking, or hard foods—helps ensure proper healing. Most patients recover fully within 1–2 weeks.
Will I need a replacement for my extracted tooth?
In many cases, yes. Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture helps maintain proper bite alignment and prevents shifting of nearby teeth. Implants have become the standard of care for replacing missing teeth, but we’ll discuss the option that is right for you during your visit.
Can extractions be avoided?
Sometimes. If a tooth can be restored with a crown, root canal, or other treatment, we’ll always try to save it first. Extraction is usually a last resort when other treatments aren’t possible.

We make your comfort and health our top priority.
